Isolated Pemba Market Needs Transport Link

(Chakechake, Pemba) – Business owners operating at the Michakaini Market in Chakechake, located in the South Pemba Region, have appealed to the government for assistance in finding ways to attract more customers to help sustain and grow their enterprises.

Speaking on Sunday, April 27, 2025, during a visit to the market by the Chakechake District Commissioner, Mgeni Khatib Yahya, the traders voiced concerns about poor cash flow resulting from a scarcity of customers. They highlighted the market’s considerable distance from populated areas as a significant challenge contributing to the low footfall.

Juma Bikso William, one of the traders at the market, suggested a practical solution to alleviate the problem. He proposed that authorities should establish a ‘daladala’ (local minibus taxi) stop near the market entrance to improve customer accessibility.

“Because there is no daladala stop nearby, it becomes difficult for people to reach the market,” Mr. William explained. “The government should help us by setting up a stop for daladalas or bajajis [auto-rickshaws] to ease transport services and increase the flow of customers.”

Another trader, Ali Bakari, expressed urgency, stating that without prompt action, their invested capital is at risk due to the deteriorating business conditions. He noted that the Michakaini Market is not yet a familiar destination for many shoppers and emphasized its remote location. “This market isn’t well-established yet and is still far out, so the environment needs to be improved to attract citizens to come and shop here,” Mr. Bakari commented.

The challenges faced by traders are echoed by customers. Ibrahim Ali, who shops at the market, pointed out that the distance from the main town significantly increases travel costs for potential buyers, discouraging many from making the journey. “From town to Michakaini, we pay double the fare, which adds to our expenses,” Mr. Ali said. “If the government establishes a daladala stop, I believe it will simplify access and attract many more customers.”

Responding to these concerns, District Commissioner Mgeni Khatib Yahya acknowledged the difficulties faced by the traders and customers. She assured them that the government is aware of the situation and is already taking steps to address it. Ms. Yahya stated that her office is collaborating with the Chakechake Municipal Council to work towards establishing a small daladala stop close to the market.

“We recognise this challenge and are continuing to work with the Municipal Council to ensure a daladala stop is established to help bring passengers closer to the market,” the District Commissioner affirmed.
