Heavy Rainfall Expected in Several Kenyan Counties – Stay Safe

(Nairobi) – The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory, warning residents in parts of Central Kenya, Nairobi, the Central Rift Valley, and the Southeastern lowlands to prepare for intense rain from Thursday, November 14, to Friday, November 15, 2024.

The advisory identifies several areas at risk, including Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni. These regions are expected to experience heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving more than 20mm of rain within 24 hours. The rainfall could intensify on Friday, November 15, with amounts potentially exceeding 30mm in certain areas.

The meteorological department has also raised concerns about the possibility of flash floods in low-lying areas. Southeastern lowlands and central Nairobi are expected to be particularly affected. The department has urged residents to be vigilant, as heavy rains can cause sudden floods, especially in areas near rivers and seasonal water channels.

As part of the advisory, the Meteorological Department has provided several safety guidelines for affected residents. They are advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water, as even shallow water can be dangerous. Additionally, people should stay indoors and away from trees and windows during thunderstorms, which are likely to accompany the heavy rains.

Residents living in landslide-prone areas, especially on the slopes of the Aberdare Ranges, Mt. Kenya, and other hilly regions, are urged to be extra cautious. The department warns that these areas could experience increased risks of landslides due to the intense rainfall.

Furthermore, the advisory highlights the potential for flash floods in areas downstream from rivers or along seasonal rivers. In these areas, water can rise unexpectedly, even when it is not raining locally. This phenomenon makes it crucial for residents to remain alert to changes in water levels and seek shelter when necessary.

According to the department, the heavy rains are expected to decrease in intensity starting Saturday, November 16, but residents should continue to monitor the weather and follow safety instructions during this period.
