(Lamu) – Six people have lost their lives in maritime accidents off the coast of Lamu in 2024, following a series of 17 reported incidents during the year.
Between January and November 2024, Lamu County recorded a total of 17 maritime accidents. These incidents involved boats and vessels capsizing due to rough waves, explosions and fires on board, and vessels sinking in the open sea. Some incidents were linked to people failing to swim while enjoying recreational activities in the water, while others involved missing boats or vessels that were later found with their crew members dead.
In cases where boats or vessels went missing, rescue operations were launched and continued until the search was called off, after the missing individuals could not be located.
In an interview with Taifa Digital, Shee Kupi, the Director of Disaster and Emergency Rescue in Lamu County, confirmed that the number of maritime accidents recorded in 2024 was lower compared to the previous year. However, he noted that the number of fatalities had increased this year.
“In 2024, we recorded 17 maritime accidents, where efforts were made to rescue the people involved. Unfortunately, six people lost their lives. In 2023, we recorded 22 incidents, with five fatalities and some survivors,” said Kupi.
According to Kupi’s department, the Indian Ocean saw stronger storms in 2023, while the conditions in 2024 were calmer, contributing to greater safety for maritime travelers.
